Similar to a Rickey or a Cobbler, Sour is a category of drink that can be made with any base spirit. A Whiskey Sour is the most popular variety though, and the ingredients come together into a wonderful (and delicious) balance. Properly, any Sour is supposed to be served in a Sour glass (similar to a stout-looking wine glass), but I find that a rocks glass works just as well for those with limited space above their home bar.
2 oz whiskey (blended Canadian is recommended)
1 1/2 Tbs lemon juice
1 Tbs simple syrup
1 orange wheel
1 maraschino cherry
Measure the whiskey, lemon juice and simple syrup into a shaker half filled with ice and shake well for about 30 seconds. Strain into your glass of choice and garnish with orange wheel and maraschino cherry.
